Cats Need Homes

18 June, 2008 (15:10) | Banter, News, Quick Dig | No comments

kittiesneedhomesI am currently catless because my baby is back in Holland being quarantined by my Mother-in-Law, which is both good news and bad news. The good news is that Boeffie, my kitty, has now free reign over a very large garden in the countryside where she can climb trees and catch creatures. Bad news is that I can’t offer her the same joy back here in England so it would be cruel to bring her here - thus I feel I have lost ownership over Boeffie :(

Anyway, because I am living back with my parents and am far from being able to move out I am unable to get a cat here - all thanks to Bill Oddie and his obsession with birds and such. My Dad is an avid fan of all creatures great and small, (bar cats), and has taken the advice of Mr Oddie whom says that cats are killing creatures left right and centre. It’s soooo not fair considering we domesticated cats in the first place and it is our duty to make sure they have happy homes. I’m sure the RSPCA is not too happy with all the cats now being left out in the cold.

To this end, I’m going to totally ignore Bill and his ‘words of wisdom’ and paste a few links for Kitties who need homes, because if no one has them only two things can happen; the RSPCA run out of money FAST or the Kitties will get the chop - BE KILLED!
The first link I have provided covers the North of Middlesex, but I have also included a link for the RSPCA in general.
Please think! Get a Cat.

Real Car Sharing

7 May, 2008 (14:56) | Banter, Ideas | No comments

Whilst waiting for the bus I happened upon an idea.

Why not sell cars at two prices: 1 for people who want to car-hog all day long and a discounted price to those who would be willing to pick people up.

The people who’d opted to pick people up subscribe to a scheme where they have a chip put in their car linked to a SatNav. When starting their journey they type in their destination and the route they intend to go.

Pedestrians also subscribe to the scheme and have a chip on a card which they keep in their pocket - that too can be programmed (via computer at home) which also has intended destination, but not route as this is irrelevant.
When the Subscribed car drives along it’s route it notifies of pedestrians standing at bus stops up ahead and prompts the driver to pick that person up if the destination of the pedestrian matches that of either the route or destination of the car driver.

Once the car has picked up 3 passengers, or more depending on your car insurance, the SatNav will not alert the driver until a seat becomes vacant.

Finally, for each passenger the driver picked up they are either rewarded points which they can spend at shops or get a discount on their car insurance.

Both pedestrians and Drivers must be vetted before they can enter the scheme to avoid any criminal intent on either part.

Controlling the documents, man!

30 April, 2008 (21:34) | Banter, News | No comments

I am almost nearing the end of my first month of work for Imtech Meica, “one of the largest mechanical and electrical services contractors operating within the London and South East region”, as a Document Controller.

This job is quite different from my last one working on Heathrow’s Terminal 5, which was my very first DC appointment, but I’m finding it way more interesting because I have much more to learn.

On T5 there was 1 Document Control system: Documentum. We all had to eat, live and breathe Documentum no matter which company we were employed by. In this job, however, I have to learn whatever the ‘client’ uses and as there are many jobs and clients there are many DCM systems.
So far I’ve been exposed to three: Asite, 4Projects and BIW for ISG, and although they’re all pretty much the same they’re NOT Documentum - who, by the way, are now owned by EMC - something which happened while I was away.

One of the main differences between these systems is that with Documentum you couldn’t go wrong; ergo it did most of the legwork all you had to do was enter some choice bits of information.
With Asite, 4Projects and BIW you can enter anything you like, whether it be the right or wrong bit of information, and they [the DCM's] will pretty much accept anything. This, if you know what I mean, can be most troubling as everyone either knows what the numbering system is or they don’t and if they don’t you end up with a whole lot of useless, or incorrect information which then gets rejected.
Documentum never let you make such faux pas, so long as you had strict guidelines programmed into it.

Anyways, I’m enjoying my new appointment because I work with the Design Team; caddies and engineers who are all individually funky and seem to make the day go quickly, sometimes too quickly - not that I’ve nothing else to do but I’m living back with my parents until I can find a place to rent, so going back to my childhood home every night is not something I always look forward too. Still, I will hopefully be moving out soon and all will be well.

This is Gedye, over and out.

PS1: I should get paid for plugging all these companies!
PS2: My hubby now works for Kodime and is very proud to do so.
PS3: <—– I still haven’t bought one yet :(

I’ve become a Sheep

31 March, 2008 (11:56) | Banter, News | No comments

I have unfortunately/fortunately* become a member of Facebook and have lost myself in it’s juicy goodness.
I’ve become addicted because of all the useless applications one can play with and my favourites at the moment are ‘Buy/Selll a Friend’ and ‘Greenies’.
So if you have a Facebook account and you need one extra friend you can go ahead and add me - I will accept regardless of who you are so long as it’s not to meet devious ends.

Click here to view my corner of Facebook (or as me’hubby calls it Faecesbook).

* Delete as appropriate.

….. Speaking of sheep, I went to BA/BAA’s new Terminal 5 yesterday. So far I’d only seen T5 on paper (having worked on the T5 Project as Logistic’s Document Controller) and I have to say I’m in two minds about it.
I will admit it looked much nicer as a model but I’ll not give it bad marks. It has to be said that the Arrivals level is a wee bit small; it’s narrow and have limited spaces for coffee-goers. Due to the baggage problem I presume that there were allot less people there than normal and still it seemed cramped.
The Departures level however was much bigger and quite awesome - lots of space, great height, very light and airy and a job well done. Not quite as many shops Landside as I remember being in the plans but the structural architecture was all that it promised to be.
I went for a ‘Quick Breakfast’ in the 5 Tuns ‘pub’ which cost £4.95 and was sort of nice. The heat, however, in the terminal was a little hotter than I would have hoped for; whether this was intentional or if the heating system had broken I will find out when I return in a few weeks time. If you go there and find the climate a little hot then I suggest you move to the rear of ‘Accessorize’ where a small amount of air-con is available.
All in all I’d give it 8/10 for overall goodness. Still doesn’t make me less scared of flying though so it could be a good few years before I see it Airside.

Gedye’s Top 5 Weird Als

22 March, 2008 (18:40) | Banter, Public Domain | No comments

Weird Al Yankovic, it has to be said, is a musical god of sorts and has devoted all his musical talents to making good songs even better than there were before, but that is a matter of opinion (covers ears to block out the naysayers).
I thought it would be a nice thing to list my favourite Weird Als’ because that’s what this blog is for.

Coming in at No. 5 is ‘Bob’
- a stereo-typical piss take of the legendary Bob Dylan. I am not a Bob fan personally but I know his following is vast and could almost fill a country on it’s own.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Bob

At No. 4 is ‘Ebay’ - based on a song by Backstreet Boys. I don’t like the original but this little didly gives me just cause to hum along…. Thanks Al :*

"Ebay" by Weird Al Yankovic

At No. 3 is ‘Mmm Mmm Mm’ - Original song by Crash Test Dummies. In this Weird Al tries to capture the facial features as best he can to give added ooomf to the whole idea of Mmmmmmming - and just like the original it’s full of pain and woe, only funnier.

weird al - headline news - parody of mmm mmm mm by ctd

Kicking in at No. 2 is ‘Amish Paradise’ - Originally my No. 1 for the longest time this baby is based on the original song Gangsters Paradise by Coolio featured in the film Dangerous Minds. The original song on it’s own is great and I’m a fan of it, but Weird Al’s version is fantastic because it takes the piss out of a sect of people who already gag for a piss taking, no offense.

So, pushing Amish Paradise off the No. 1 spot is ‘White and Nerdy’ - A fantastic coming together of Weird Al’s great humour, talented vocal set and comical wit. This little baby is based on ‘Riding Dirty’ by Chamillionaire. Why do I love it so much? Well you just have to listen to the lyrics to appreciate that Weird Al knows his stuff with regards to the world of Nerdism and in some regards I think I quite possibly may be a Nerd myself, except I do not own a Segway - but I would if I could. ENJOY!
